WHAT IS JUDO

About

Judo is a modern Japanese martial art that grew from older samurai grappling systems, with techniques adapted so they can be practised safely in training and competition. From standing, students learn to off-balance and throw their opponent to the ground with control; on the ground, they learn to pin and submit using holds and strangles rather than strikes.

Unlike many other combat sports, Judo does not involve kicking, punching, weapons, or joint-breaking techniques, which makes it suitable for children, teens, and adults when taught correctly.

More than a Martial Art

Judo is also a character-building activity. Training emphasises:

  • Respect: Bowing, good manners, and care for training partners.

  • Discipline: Regular practice, listening, and gradual progress through grades.

  • Confidence: Learning to fall safely, stand your ground, and solve problems under pressure.

These values make Judo an excellent choice for kids’ physical and social development, and a rewarding challenge for adults.

How Judo is Practiced

Judo training combines:

  • Technical drills for throws, pins, and submissions.

  • Safe falling practice (ukemi) so students can land without fear.

  • Controlled sparring (randori) to apply skills against a resisting partner.

Sessions are supervised by qualified coaches, with a strong focus on safety and looking after each other on the mat.

Sport and Competition

Judo can be enjoyed purely for fitness and self-defence, or as a competitive sport. Local, state, and national competitions give athletes a chance to test themselves in a structured, refereed environment.

Competitors are matched by age, weight, and experience, and learn goal-setting, resilience, and sportsmanship along the way.

Judo In the ACT

Within the ACT, Judo clubs offer programs for kids, teens, and adults, from beginners through to experienced competitors. Many families train together, and there is a strong sense of community on and off the mat.

Whether the goal is confidence for a child, fitness for an adult, or performance for an aspiring athlete, Judo provides a clear pathway and supportive environment to grow.
