ACT Restrictions on informal sport carefully eased

The ACT Government has announced the first phase of gradual easing of restrictions on sport and recreation.

At this stage the following are allowed:

  • informal outdoor, non-contact sport to restart and commercial pools allowed to reopen from midnight Friday 15 May.

  • non-contact sporting activity can recommence in outdoor spaces with a maximum of 10 people with physical contact to be avoided and physical distancing as an integral part of their activity.

At this stage the following are NOT allowed:

  • Indoor sporting venues and fitness gyms will remain closed at this stage – reopening will be, in line with health advice.

The sharing of fitness equipment and surfaces coupled with an indoor crowded and sweaty environment pose a serious risk for the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus.

So activity is limited to outdoors until at least the next phase of restrictions. The government says this is to adhere to social distancing of one person per 4 metres-squared and there is no set timeline to restart indoor activities.

Remember that in any activity you do, you must maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres apart or 4 square metres per person and continue to practice personal hygiene. These measures continue to be most effective to stop the spread of COVID-19.
